What Is Microblading?

Microblading is a cosmetic procedure where aestheticians use a microblade tool and medical-grade semi-permanent pigments to draw realistic-looking hair strokes to fill in your eyebrows. These pigments are deposited under your skin, giving you the appearance of fuller eyebrows that blends well with your natural hair. The process can also change your brow shape and brow thickness.

One microblading session takes around two hours, depending on the treatment needed to achieve the eyebrow look you want. Afterwards, the pigments can take up to one month to settle into the skin.  After four weeks, a touch up session is needed to ensure that there are no areas that may need more ink deposited. The pigment is semi-permanent and can last anywhere from one to three years, depending on several factors.

Microblading is a popular cosmetic treatment for both men and women. If you have naturally thin or sparse eyebrows, this can take a lot of time and effort to fix every day with eyebrow makeup. Or if you want to perfect your no makeup look and get out of bed with perfectly sculpted eyebrows, microblading is the low-maintenance solution that can last you several years.

Benefits of Getting Microblading Services

  • Low maintenance – microblading gives you fuller eyebrows. This means having to do less work every morning putting on brow makeup to fill and shape the problem areas; a few strokes of brow gel or brow soap is enough to tidy up your brows. No expensive brow products or time-consuming brow upkeep necessary on your end!
  • Customizable to your face – the best results come from skilled aestheticians with experience in microblading. Our team can provide you with eyebrows that can flatter your facial features best.
  • Long-lasting results – microblading is a semi-permanent process that can last from one to three years depending on skin type and other factors. During that time, your brows won’t fade or discolor.
  • Natural-looking brows – once the pigments settle into your brow area after two weeks, you get microbladed eyebrows that can be difficult to tell apart from your natural eyebrow hairs. There’s a noticeable improvement in the fullness and shape, but it’s a natural-looking improvement that complements your appearance.
  • Treat sparse hairs affected by medical conditions – microblading isn’t just for people who want to improve their existing brow look. People experiencing hair fall from conditions like alopecia or chemotherapy can continue to look their best with minimal effort by having pigment resembling real-looking brow hair.

What to Expect from Microblading

Prior to your microblading sessions, you’ll sit down with our aestheticians to discuss your treatment. They’ll explain the procedure and recommend the right eyebrow hair color and brow style that will best complement your facial features. They can even draw the brow shape you want for you to check if it flatters your appearance. This is also the best time to ask any questions you may have about microblading.

During the microblading appointment, your aesthetician will apply a topical anesthetic onto the eyebrow area. This is to minimize the discomfort during the procedure. The aesthetician will then draw on each hair onto your brows with a microblade tool. The pigment will be just underneath the surface of the skin, similar to tattoos. Depending how much area they need to cover, the procedure can take anywhere from one to two hours.

After the procedure, it’s normal for your brows to look darker than usual. After 10 to 14 days, your brows will begin to flake or scab off the excess pigment, leaving lighter and more natural-looking hairs in its place. However, the healing process can take up to six weeks.

Depending on the state of their eyebrows, most patients need around two to three microblading sessions to get their desired results. The second treatment is usually for final touch-ups eight weeks after the first session to ensure the treated area was applied correctly. A third session may be needed for those with very oily skin or those with little to no natural eyebrow hair.

Microblading vs. Tattooed Eyebrows vs. Microshading

Microblading is often confused with other aesthetic treatments like eyebrow tattoos and microshading. Some beauty gurus and bloggers may use these terms interchangeably to refer to cosmetic tattooing, but keep in mind that the results of microblading aren’t the same as tattooed eyebrows and microshading.

Tattooed eyebrows are a permanent makeup procedure, similar to getting body tattoos. Tattoo ink is made with industrial plastic-based ingredients, which is why they last forever and have deeper colors, while microblading uses semi-permanent pigments that can fade into a lighter color. Tattooed eyebrows also require the ink to penetrate deeper layers of the skin, while microblading leaves pigment just below the surface. And while microblading requires aestheticians to draw hair strokes individually, tattooed eyebrows are more for coloring in the desired shape you want to achieve.

Microshading is more similar to microblading in the sense that they both use pigments. But microshading applies pin-like dots to fill-in sparse areas on top of the skin for a powder brow effect, while a microblading procedure applies the pigment beneath the skin. Think of microshading as getting semi-permanent powder brows that can last for up to six months, while microblading gives you the appearance of real-looking eyebrow hairs.

Who Can Get Microblading Services?

Microblading is a great cosmetic treatment for anyone, regardless of skin type, skin tone, and hair color. As long as you’re getting your microblading treatments from an experienced aesthetician, you can expect natural-looking results that flatter the rest of your facial features.

However, if you have any of these conditions, you may not be a good candidate for microblading sessions:

  • An allergic reaction to organic pigments – your aesthetician should confirm if you have potential allergies to the pigment during your initial consultation.
  • An active skin infection – this can put you at risk of bacterial infection penetrating the skin, as microblading breaks the surface. If you have skin infections like acne, wait for your condition to fully heal before getting microblading treatment.

  • Have recently had intense facial treatments – if you’ve had chemical peels, dermabrasions, Botox injections or any other minimally-invasive facial treatments, wait up to one month before getting microblading.
  • Are taking blood-thinners – avoid blood-thinning food and medication like fish oil, aspirin, and ibuprofen at least one week before your appointment.

The quality of your microblading results is dependent on the skill of your provider. Considering your microbladed brows can last up to three years, it’s best to consider highly-qualified providers with the experience and a successful track record of satisfied microblading patients.
