How Long After Botox and Fillers Can I Exercise?

Botox and dermal fillers have been some of the most trusted options by those who want effective results for treating their wrinkles. Most people prefer these injectables because they are safe, FDA-approved, and have little to no downtime. It just involves injections in the face, and you would have the results you want. Anyone can return to their daily routine right after their procedure; however, is it the same thing with exercising?

So when is exercising safe after getting these cosmetic injections? Wait for about 24 to 48 hours after treatment or up to a week for better results and safety precautions. Exercising right after your treatment can cause the substances in your injected areas to migrate because of pressure, movement, and blood flow.

How Long to Wait Before Exercise

Both Botox and dermal fillers are minimally invasive procedures. You don't need to wait too long before it can heal or settle compared to getting surgery. That is why these treatments are the go-to options for those who want to enhance their features in the least possible time.

However, you might need to wait for 24 to 48 hours after treatment before you can continue your exercise habits. Avoid doing strenuous activities for a few days after treatment for about a week to ensure that it’s safer and the injectables have settled well. Exercising interferes with how dermal fillers and Botox treatment work.

Botox treatment involves injecting botulinum toxin in the muscle to temporarily relax it, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. On the other hand, a dermal filler treatment involves injecting substances to boost your skin and provide volume to the treated area. Aestheticians will administer these fillers under your skin.

Why Avoid Exercising Soon After Cosmetic Injections

Botox and dermal fillers rely on their substances to stay in place and settle for better results. Exercising will cause your body to react in a way that will affect your dermal filler or Botox injections.

1) Blood Flow

We know that doing your regular cardio exercises is what our body needs. A strenuous exercise improves how our heart pumps blood and delivers it throughout our bodies. However, an increase in blood flow will also affect your Botox or dermal fillers if you just had the procedure.

Increased blood flow may migrate the botulinum toxin in the treated area.  Botox migrations can freeze the surrounding muscle instead of the injection site.

Your dermal fillers can migrate, too, if you exercise right after the procedure. It may also not last long enough in some cases due to strenuous activity. Your body considers some fillers, such as hyaluronic acid, the same as fat. Exercising may gradually “burn” your dermal fillers and may lose their effect sooner than others.

2) Moving Around

It’s important to keep still for four hours after Botox and dermal filler procedures to allow the products to integrate into the desired area. Moving your head around too much can migrate your Botox or dermal fillers. That’s why your aesthetician might not recommend even light exercises right after your cosmetic procedures.

Activities such as pilates, stretching, and yoga will make you move around, bend, and lie down, which will affect your Botox or dermal fillers. Facial strain is also one of the things you should avoid.

3) Applying Pressure

Exercising may cause you to touch your face. Applying pressure on the injected site within 4 hours after your procedure may also migrate your Botox or dermal fillers. The treated area is still sensitive, so you may also feel some discomfort. Avoid wearing goggles or any other gear that may apply pressure to your Botox or dermal filler sites.

4) Bruising

A rise in blood pressure after exercising causes bruising or swelling if you just had your Botox or dermal filler injections. The injected site will be sensitive after the procedure. A sudden increase in blood flow might damage your blood vessels, which is why your injection site may bruise due to exercising.

Types of Exercises Safe for Botox and Dermal Fillers

Stopping abruptly from your workout routine may be a problem if you lead an active lifestyle, although a week of abstinence might not have a significant impact on your metabolism. We have a few options that may still keep you in shape after your cosmetic procedure. Think of this as active recovery or a light exercise!

1) Facial Exercises

Straining your face after Botox may not be recommended, but facial exercises are highly recommended! Doing facial expressions such as raising eyebrows, smiling, or frowning will result in better results for your Botox.

A study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found 68% of participants believed the facial exercises they performed sped the onset of their Botox results.

2) Walking

Walking is a good way to burn a few calories, even if you just had Botox or fillers. It keeps the fluids in your body in motion, avoiding a buildup of fat and calories. Make sure not to touch your face and move your head too much. Avoid direct sunlight which might enlarge your blood vessels. Walk slowly and keep your heart rate in check.

3) Bike Rides

A nice, chill ride around town is also a good way to keep active after getting Botox or fillers. Take it slow, too, and avoid getting your heart rate up.
